Deep Foundations are slender elements with a relatively small base or diameter compared to their length. Their main objective is to transfer the above-ground structure load to deeper soil and/or rock layers. These elements are selected when near-surface soil or rock layers do not have the engineering strength properties to support the loads. In addition to transferring loads to deeper soil and/or rock layers, deep foundations are used to mitigate large moments, lateral loading, and eccentric loading conditions.
